Mike Carey

Carey_1Mike Carey was born in Liverpool and worked for years as a teacher. He began his career in comics working for the British fanzine FANTASY ADVERTISER, which was the launching pad for many British comics creators, including Mark Millar and Paul Grist. Carey wrote two strips starring rock stars Ozzy Osbourne and Pantera, for which he admits doing a less than stellar work. Nevertheless, he was given another chance when he co-created, along with Mike Perkins, DOCTOR FAUSTUS for Caliber.

This was apparently enough for him to make the jump to DC/Vertigo, where he was assigned to write the mini series LUCIFER: THE MORNINGSTAR OPTION, under the “SANDMAN PRESENTS” umbrella, with art by Peter Gross.

Carey_2LUCIFER’s undisputed quality earned Carey an Eisner Award nomination. For “Sandman Presents” he also created, with John Bolton, the graphic novel THE FURIES. He was responsible for one of the longest runs on HELLBLAZER and he also wrote the graphic novel HELLBLAZER: ALL HIS ENGINES, with art by Leonardo Manco. He partnered again with John Bolton on the graphic novel GOD SAVE THE QUEEN, where they once again revisited characters from the Sandman Universe.

Later on, he moved to Marvel Comics, where he wrote many issues for ULTIMATE FANTASTIC FOUR, while he also took on a number of special projects, including the origin of Beast, for the X-MEN: ORIGINS series. At the same time, he continued working for Vertigo, where he created CROSSING MIDNIGHT, along with artist Jim Fern. Currently, he’s writing THE UNWRITTEN for Vertigo, with long-time partner Peter Gross, while he’s the regular writer for Marvel’s X-MEN: LEGACY.

Aside from his comics work, Mike Carey has also written a number of books starring Felix Castor, an exorcist who always gets caught up in unusual situations. He has also written the screenplay for the movie FROST FLOWERS, which will be in theatres in 2010.
