The award-winning cartoonist and illustrator was born in Israel in 1966. She is a co-founder of the Actus Comics Group, with professor Yirmi Pinkus, and creator of the graphic novels ΕΧΙΤ WOUNDS (2007) and THE PROPERTY (2013), which have received rave reviews from her peers, among them PALESTINE author Joe Sacco, as well as the New York Times, where Modan’s clear art line was compared to Hergé’s work in TINTIN. The Actus Group won worldwide recognition and was crowned by ID Magazine as one of the most influential design groups of 2007.
In 2008, ΕΧΙΤ WOUNDS received the Eisner Award for Best New Graphic Novel, and was also included in TIME Magazine’s Top 10 graphic novels list of 2007. Similarly, THE PROPERTY won the Eisner for Best Graphic Novel in 2014, the Special Jury Prize in the International Comics Festival in Angoulême, and the first prize for best book of the year in Lucca Comics & Games Festival, in Italy. Modan’s comics & children’s books have been translated into 15 languages
In 2013, Rutu Modan and Professor Pinkus established the Noah Library, an independent publishing house specializing in comics for young children.
